Chapter 20
That’s Entertainment!
My blue Mercury was in the driveway, and there were two yellow envelopes from Western Union stuck in the door jamb when I got back home. One was from Lillie, sent from Albuquerque: “Sun shining here. Hope you are same. Love, Lil.” The second, from my producer, gave me just the excuse I needed: “Geo. Corwin out. Replacement writer? Call. Buzz.”
I poured a double cognac, got out my Writers Guild directory, looked up Oliver Tulley and dialed.
“Georgie! Caught me on the way out the door.”
“It’s work, Ollie.”
“The door is locked from the outside, George. I got nothin’ but time.”
“How would you like to do a six or seven minute patriotic drop-in for my radio show, Ollie?” Nothing like an offer of employment to heal old wounds. “I’ll give you Ronnie Reagan and a ten-voice chorus.”
“Work! Well, sure, Georgie. Patriotic pap, huh?”
“Something like the stuff you wrote for Pat O’Hara in Babes In Khaki.”
“What is an American?” declaimed Ollie in a faint brogue. “He’s a Broadway zip with a flask on his hip, he’s a bum from Baltimore! We shudda got an Oscar nod.”
“I wish you’d gotten more credit for it back in ’42, Ollie. I was pretty green back then. Is it a deal? I’ll meet you at Musso’s tomorrow after my regular writers’ meeting. Say two o’clock?”
“It’ll be like old times, Georgie! We’ll win the war!” He clicked off.
Ollie wasn’t Corwin, but Ronnie wasn’t Welles. The fish was, however, on the line. I planned to pour Gibsons down Tulley’s gullet until he came clean about the King murder.
The L.A. phone book yielded a number for Johnnie’s Grocery. DRexel 9255. I dialed it. After several rings the other end picked up.
“Good evening,” a mature female voice said.
“‘Scuse me, how late are you open?”
“I close at seven and open at eight tomorrow.”
“Is Tommy Takasago in?”
She hung up immediately and the dial tone buzzed at me for a few moments. I cut the sound off with a finger.
